A 45-year-old woman underwent a right shoulder arthroscopy for rotator cuff tendinitis with impingement.
GA was induced and the patient positioned left lateral decubitus with an axillary roll and bean bag.
Upon awakening in PACU she had swelling and blistering of her left axilla.
The PACU nurse called the anesthesiologist over.
After discharge she followed up with her PCP who sent her to a burn clinic due to the severity.
There she was diagnosed with 2nd and 3rd degree chemical burns.
She required debridement of the area and was given a prescription for collagenase and oral pain medicine.
A burn scar remains, as shown below:
